Having worked in the corporate space now for 15 years, it’s safe to say I’ve had my fair share of stress. Pitches, deadlines, feedback (sometimes it’s not a gift) - it gets exhausting.
I used to suffer from major anxiety. I used to get worked up over an email, a big project or an uncomfortable conversation.
In 2005 I moved to London to pursue my dreams of working for a multinational. Microsoft called - I’d hit the jackpot. But whilst my career was flourishing, my health was diminishing. I suffered from;
- IBS
- AcNe
- Missing period
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Weight gain
- Depression
Yeah.
To the outside world, I was doing great, and that was certainly the image I wanted to portray but inside, I was a mess.
After countless doctors appointments, scans, colonoscopies and tests, I was still none-the-wiser on what was wrong.
Enough was enough and I decided to look at what I could control. I looked at my lifestyle - the food I was eating, the type of exercise I was going, how I was treating myself. It didn’t look great. A career in media had taken its toll and all the lunches, drinks and long nights had left their mark.
And so, I decided to take a step in the right direction. I started to make decisions that were best for me. A clean diet and better exercise was the place to start. A natural approach to a better life.
Within just six months, I’d lost the weight, regained my period, was POS free and my skin was clear. It worked.
With my physical health a-ok, it was time to focus on my mental health.
Enter mindfulness and self-care. And boy did it do wonders. Who would have thought that 2 minutes of deep-belly breathing work and a daily meditation would have SUCH an impact on my anxiety?
My life had done a 350 (cos there’s always room for more improvement 😉 )
So, why stop there I thought?
